A new Federal Regulation could impact how you use the Debit or ATM Card you have with us.

Right now, the balance we send for Cash withdrawals at ATMs or Debit Card Purchases includes your Overdraft Protection limit as well. This new Regulation requires that we get your approval to continue to include this amount in your balance.

Opting In will help make sure your ATM withdrawals and Debit Card purchases are honored and paid - even if you don’t have enough money in your account at the time.

Here are 2 examples of how this new regulation could affect you – even if your account is never overdrawn.

Examples:

GAS – PAY AT THE PUMP
If you pay at the pump for gas, the processor has no way of knowing how much gas you are going to buy when you insert your card. So they pre-authorize your card for an amount somewhere between $75 and $125 – depending on the location of the station and the price of gas at that time. Then when you are done it completes the sale for only the amount you bought. If you didn’t have up to $125 available, you may not get authorized to buy the gas, even if you only wanted to buy $20 worth. Also, we have seen where these authorizations stay out on the system for a few days afterwards, and tie up your ability to access those funds.

By having your Overdraft Privilege amount added to your balance, these transactions are transparent to you –even though you may never go overdrawn.

PURCHASES THE DAY PRIOR TO PAYROLL/OTHER DEPOSIT
There are times when you may wish to make a purchase using your debit card or withdraw funds from the ATM the evening before your payroll or other deposit will be made.

By having your Overdraft Privilege amount added to your balance, these transactions can be completed without you ever going overdrawn – saving you the inconvenience of having to write a paper check or the embarrassment of having your card declined while in line at the market.

The Federal Government says in order to continue your Overdraft Protection privilege we need your consent.

  • What You Need to Know about Overdrafts and Overdraft Fees

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway. We can cover your overdrafts using our standard overdraft practices.

WHAT ARE THE STANDARD OVERDRAFT PRACTICES THAT COME WITH MY ACCOUNT?
We do authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions:
    - Checks and other transactions made using your checking account number
    - Automatic bill payments

We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us to (see below):
    - ATM transactions
    - Everyday debit card transactions

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.

WHAT FEES WILL I BE CHARGED IF THE HNB PAYS MY OVERDRAFT?
    Under our standard overdraft practices:
    - We will charge you a fee of up to $30.00 each time we pay an overdraft.
    - Also, if your account is overdrawn for 3 consecutive business days, we will charge an additional $3.00 per day.
    - There is no limit on the total fees we can charge you for overdrawing your account.
